Ghiberti, Lorenzo (1378-1455), Italian sculptor, one of the most important early
Renaissance sculptors of Florence, Italy. His sculpture shows lyrical grace,
technical perfection, and classical clarity of weight and volume. His work
and writings formed the basis for much of the style and aims of the later
High Renaissance. Ghiberti
was born in Florence and trained as a goldsmith. In 1403 he won his first
major commission, the making of the second pair of bronze doors for the
baptistery of the cathedral of Florence. He spent more than 20 years
completing the project, aided by his students, including artists Donatello
and Paolo Uccello. Ghiberti's greatest work was the third set of bronze doors
for the baptistery at Florence (completed in 1452). These doors, each
portraying five scenes from the Old Testament, show a development toward
naturalistic movement, volume, and perspective, as well as a greater
idealization of subject.
